Parts of Nagaland to witness heavy rain on October 9 and 10: NSDMA issues precautionary measures

Kiphire, Kohima, Mokokchung, Peren and Tuensang  will witness heavy rain accompanied by localized thunderstorm and lightning on October 9 and 10, informed the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA), Home Department. It has cautioned the need to take necessary measures at this period, including avoiding lightning strikes and high winds, which can disrupt communication and connectivity.

In its weather updates for four days from October 8 to 11, the NSDMA notified that Nagaland will witness localized thunderstorm and lightning with moderate rain to light rain at most places till the October 11. Due to the risk of high precipitation in the hill sector, Nagaland’s lowland and foothill districts, including Dimapur, Niuland, Chümoukedima, Bhandari, Baghty, Tizit, and Tuli, are vulnerable to inundated waterlogging and flash floods, stated the NSDMA.

In this regard, the low-lying districts are requested to implement the following precautionary measures in light of the current flood situation:

-Keep valuable documents and item in safe locker to prevent loss and damage.

-Evacuate low lying areas if advised by authorities.

-Avoid entering flood waters or driving through flooded areas.

-Disconnect and place electrical appliances off ground level.

-Boil water before drinking or use chlorinated water.

-Be alert to any open drain holes or flood channels.

The hilly districts has also been requested to implement the following precautionary measures in light of any landslide situation:

-Be alert during heavy rainfall and continuous damp weather.

-Stay out of the path of a landslide or debris flow.

-Listen for any unusual sound that might indicate moving debris, trees cracking or rolling boulders (large stones)

-Be alert when there is a sudden increase in volume of water in streams and a marked transformation from clear to muddy water.

The NSDMA, Home Department urged the public to exercise caution to avoid any eventualities during this period. It also requested all the District Disaster Management Authorities and other line departments to remain on high alert to safeguard lives and property during the monsoon season.
