PDA Mokokchung celebrates Tsüngremmung festival; MLA Imchen calls for political maturity amid coalition challenges

The ruling People’s Democratic Alliance (PDA) Mokokchung district celebrated the Tsüngremmung festival on August 2 at Rempo Dikhu Road, Ungma. The event brought together leaders and members from both the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) and alliance partner Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to mark the cultural occasion.

MLA and advisor for Information and Public Relations Imkong L Imchen, in his address commented on the current political climate in Nagaland, stating that Nagaland politics has become a “fantastic fantasy”—something that sounds good but is unlikely to materialize in reality.

“We have a coalition between a regional party and a national party, yet the NDPP struggles to fully embrace this alliance, and the BJP remains confused by this fantastic fantasy,” he said.

Reaffirming the importance of political unity, Imchen said, “All Nagas are one. Two different parties coming together and working in unison is no small matter—it is the reality we are living today.”

Reflecting on the past, he recalled his opposition to the Shillong Accord, and turning to the present, he highlighted the complex political scenario, saying, “There are 28 factions today. In such a situation, where should the NDPP and BJP align themselves? The coalition should not be part of any Naga division. These are the real challenges before us.”

Imchen further pointed out that internal divisions have put Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio in a difficult position. “Due to our own internal conflicts, the Chief Minister is constantly forced into crisis management. Every day, he is managing challenges just to keep the things moving. And in the process, his life is slipping by,” he remarked.

He acknowledged that the alliance between the NDPP and BJP has come a long way and that Chief Minister Rio remains a central figure in this journey.

“Mokokchung and Kohima are interconnected, and the coalition continues to move forward based on this political understanding,” he noted.

“The art of coalition and the responsibility of governance demand maturity. We must rise above our differences and keep the larger picture in mind if we are to move forward,” he further emphasized.

Mahila Morcha, BJP Mokokchung district vice president Temjennaro L Kichu chaired the programme while NDPP Mokokchung Region (Women Organization) vice president Senlemtula pronounced the invocation. President BJP Mokokchung district O Tinu Longkumer delivered the welcome address, and NDPP Mokokchung Region vice president Marchizung spoke on the significance of the Tsüngremmung Festival.

Later, president of NDPP Mokokchung Region Repameren Yaden proposed the vote of thanks. A cultural song was presented by the Women Organization of NDPP, Mokokchung Region.
