The District Administration in Peren, in collaboration with the District Hub for Empowerment of Women (DHEW) and Sakhi-One Stop Centre (OSC), observed the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on 25th November 2023 and launched the 16 days of activism against gender-based violence at Mhaikam village under Peren District. The event centered around the theme “Unite! Invest to Prevent Violence Against Women and Girls.”
According to DIPR, at the event, Zeliangrong Mipui Organization (ZMO) President Apeuna Iheilung, emphasized the importance of women recognizing their capabilities and not viewing themselves as inferior. She highlighted the patriarchal system’s role in contributing to unequal treatment, discrimination, and violence. Advocating for equal opportunities and inclusion in decision-making processes, she called for collective efforts to eliminate violence against women.
EAC Peren, Kevethito Rose, stressed the urgent need to eradicate violence against women in all its forms. He raised awareness about various forms of violence prevalent in society and called for sensitization regarding schemes and programs for women and girls.
Officials from the Social Welfare Department highlighted government schemes and programs, including Sakhi One Stop Centre, CHILDLINE, District Hub for Empowerment of Women, and Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY).
Earlier the welcome Address was given by Teuseing Newme, VDB Secretary of Mhaikam Village. Invocation by Abui Newme, Pastor of Mhaikam Baptist Church while the program was chaired by Grace, Counselor, OSC Peren. The Vote of Thanks was delivered by Akhosi Khate, IT, OSC Peren.
