Prime Minister on Sunday commended Lidi Kro-u of Kohima Village, Nagaland, for their efforts “to preserve our traditions and traditional knowledge, to promote it and to take it forward” in his Mann Ki Baat.

Lidi Kro-u is a group of women from the four khels of the village. Apart from singing, this group of women gives trainings on traditional skills to young people with the motive to preserve and promote the traditional skills and practices of the Angami tribe.

Narendra Modi in his talk show said that the sustainable lifestyle and the skills of the Nagas is part of the glorious heritage of India and Lidi Kro-u has taken up the responsibility of “reviving beautiful facets of Naga culture which were on the verge of being lost.”

The Prime Minister also mentioned that the group gives trainings to pass traditions and skills to the next generation. The all-women society conducts workshops where the youth are taught folk songs and dances and has even launched three Naga folk music albums, according to Modi.

In such workshops, Lidi Kro-u also trains the youth in the traditional Nagaland style of apparel making, tailoring and weaving and which help the young people “not only get connected with their culture, but also create new employment opportunities for them”.

The Prime Minister exhorted the listeners of his programme to take inspiration from the women of Lidi Kro-u and make similar efforts for the preservation and promotion of the “cultural styles and traditions in your region too”.

Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio thanked Narendra Modi for acknowledging the group, tweeting that these women are “making sincere efforts to conserve traditional skills & knowledge & educate the younger generation.”

Lidi Kro-u too expressed their gratitude to the Prime Minister for mentioning their works in his Maan Ki Baat radio programme.
