Policing has to transform from enforcing to enabling: Nagaland DGP

Nagaland’s Director-General of Police (DGP) T John Longkumer, IPS, on Friday said that as the country celebrates the 75th anniversary of Independence it is realised that the ethos of policing has to transform from enforcing to enabling.

Addressing a function on Police Commemoration Day at Tennis Court, New Police Reserve in Phesama, Kohima, the DGP said police is a public service affecting a larger section of society more seriously than any other government agency.

Maintaining that in a thriving democracy, the role of police is perceived to be the preserver of law and order while they are trained to protect life and to give theirs, when necessary, he called upon the policemen to take up a new role as partner in the development process.

Lauding the Nagaland Police officers, T John Longkumer, IPS, urged the gathering not only to observe it as a day of remembrance of those who made supreme sacrifice, but also to rededicate and renew their pledge to serve the people, to secure and maintain public order, and safeguard the internal security.

He said that all over India a total of 264 personnel, including one from Nagaland, have laid their lives in service to the nation.

The DGP of Nagaland received the Roll of Honour and R V Ezung, NPS AIG (Ops) read out the Roll of Honour.

On the occasion, the DGP led the floral tribute, followed by Women PS Kohima, North Traffic PS Kohima, South Traffic PS Kohima, North PS Kohima, South PS Kohima, SP Office Kohima, NPTO, INT, 4th NAP, 10th NAP (IR), Admn Coy Kohima DEF, and Dog Squad Kohima DEF.

The Police Commemoration Day Parade was led by Parade Commander, ABSI, Paul Chawang of Kohima DEF.

The contingents that took part in the parade were 4th NAP, led by Platoon Commander ABSI Tsasel Angami, Kohima DEF led by Platoon Commander ABSI Vesunu Tetseo, Brass Band led by Hav. Ayo Sakhrie and Nishan Toli led by ABSI Neibau Mepfhüo of Kohima DEF.
