Phase 6 of the Lok Sabha elections was completed smoothly and peacefully, the Election Commission of India has said. With the conclusion of phase 6, polling for General Elections 2024 is now completed in 28 States/UTs and 486 Parliamentary Constituencies. Polling is also complete in General Elections for State Legislative Assemblies of Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Andhra Pradesh and 105 Assembly seats of Odisha State Assembly.
Phase 7, the last phase, is scheduled on 1 June 2024 in 57 PCs in 8 States and Union Territories.
The approximate total voter turnout for Phase 6 stands at 61.76% on Sunday morning. Polling was conducted on Saturday at 58 Parliamentary Constituencies across 8 States/UTs including Bihar, Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana, Jharkhand, NCT Delhi, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal. A total of 889 candidates were in the electoral fray. Polling for Odisha Assembly had also taken place simultaneously.
According to ECI’s TURNOUT APP, voter turnout was highest in West Bengal at 80.06%, followed by Odisha at 70.99%. The Commission on Saturday celebrated the turnout at Anantnag-Rajouri PC in Jammu and Kashmir where over 54% electorates cast their votes, highest in many decades.
Further, the Commission lauded voters for coming out to vote despite the hot weather in certain parts of the country. A large number of voters were still in the queue at some polling stations at the prescribed time of closing of poll, it said.
It also informed that as per the laid down procedure, the decision to conduct a repoll, if any, would be taken after the scrutiny of election papers which takes place one day after the polling day in the presence of candidates or their authorised polling agents. The Commission will also, after the scrutiny and depending on the number/ schedule of repoll, publish the updated voter turnout figures by 30th May 2024, ECI stated.
