President dissolves 17th Lok Sabha

New Delhi: Modi unanimously elected as leader of NDA

The President of India, Droupadi Murmu, has today dissolved the 17th Lok Sabha with immediate effect on the advice of the Cabinet, a day after the results of the 18th Lok Sabha was announced.

“The President signed the Order dissolving the 17th Lok Sabha in exercise of the powers conferred upon her by Sub-clause (b) of Clause (2) of Article 85 of the Constitution”, Rashtrapati Bhavan informed in a communique.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called on the President and submitted his resignation after his Party secured 240 seats in the Lok Sabha. The BJP looks forward to forming the next government with its NDA alliance with 293 seats.

Rashtrapati Bhavan informed that PM Modi tendered his resignation along with the Union Council of Ministers and that the President had accepted the resignation and requested the Prime Minister and the Union Council of Ministers to continue in office till the new Government is formed.

On Wednesday, the NDA held a meeting in New Delhi which was attended by BJP heavy weights including PM Modi, JP Nadda, Amit Shah and Rajnath Singh and alliance leaders that included Telegu Desam Party’s Chandrababu Naidu, Janata Dal (United)’s Nitish Kumar, Shiv Sena’s Ekhnath Shinde, etc.

At the meeting, Narendra Modi was “unanimously elected as the leader of the NDA”, the BJP informed. It also said that the NDA government under the leadership of Modi is “committed to serving the poor, women, youth, farmers and exploited, deprived and suffering citizens of India.” The NDA government will continue to work to improve the living standards of the people of India for the all-round development of the country by preserving the heritage of India, it added.

Meanwhile, a meeting of the INDIA (Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance) leaders is also underway at the residence of Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge in New Delhi to decide the next step of the alliance.
