In a resounding declaration of commitment to environmental stewardship, Pungro Village’s civil society organizations and the Pungro Village Students’ Union (PVSU) have jointly announced a comprehensive ban on hunting within Pungro Village jurisdiction, effectively soon after the Citizen Mihkhong passed it’s resolution on January 2 last.
This bold decision, aimed at preserving the region’s delicate ecological balance and safeguarding its vibrant avian population, is backed by stringent penalties. Any individual found violating the resolution will be liable to pay a hefty fine as per the resolution passed during the Pungro Village Mihkhong executive meeting. Additionally, the PVSU has announced penalties for each use of traps and catapults, besides firearms.
Lesemew, President of PVSU, underscored the importance of collective action, stating, “This initiative is a proactive step towards conserving our local wildlife, particularly birds that are being hunted using scope air guns.”
The PVSU urged citizens to take responsibility for conservation efforts and remind them that the Wildlife Act 1972 is stringent and leaves no room for leniency.
Vongtukiu, Chairman of the Pungro Village Council, echoed this sentiment, saying, “As leaders, it’s our duty to protect our natural heritage. I appeal to all citizens to join hands with us in this conservation drive. Let’s work together to preserve Pungro Village’s rich biodiversity for future generations.”
The community decision is a significant stride towards sustainable development and environmental conservation in the region. The community also appealed to all citizens, neighbouring villages, students’ union and residence of Pungro town to join hands in this noble endeavour and work collectively towards a hunting-free and sustainable future.

The meeting was attended by representatives from various civil society organizations of Pungro village and the PVSU, was held at the Pungro Village Council Community Hall and was marked by a sense of unity and purpose with the – conservation efforts aimed at preserving the avian population and Collective action urged to safeguard ecological balance in the jurisdiction.
The Council also highlighted on the preservation of community forest especially the Mithun Project and natural water streams in the Pungro Village jurisdiction having its traditional values.
