On the occasion of World Refugee Day, the Secretary General of the United Nations António Guterres has called for the world’s collective responsibility in assisting and welcoming refugees, in upholding their human rights and ultimately, in resolving conflicts so that those forced from their communities can return home.
In his statement, he highlighted that according to the latest figures on refugees, “conflict, climate chaos and upheaval” have displaces more than 120 million people around the world, including 43.5 million refugees.
World Refugee Day is about honouring their strength and courage – and stepping up efforts to protect and support refugees on every step of their journey, Guterres stated, urging that refugees need global solidarity and the ability to rebuild their lives in dignity.
UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, honoured the millionsforced to flee violence and persecution. “We celebrate their remarkable fortitude and capacity for renewal, despite the daunting challenges they face,” he added in his statement.
He highlighted that in recent months, nearly 700,000 people have crossed over to South Sudan to Sudan fleeing the devasting war.
“Refugees arriving at borders is not just an issue for rich countries”, he said, adding that three quarters of the world’s refugees live in countries with low or modest incomes. Grandi stated that it is false and and irresponsible to claim that most refugees are trying to get to Europe or the US.
The UN High Commissioner urged for the world to do more to show solidarity with refugees and work towards a world where they are welcomed, or can return home in peace. With courage, commitment and compassion, solutions are within our grasp, he said.
