A two days regional workshop entitled “Paleogene Sedimentary Records of NE India” was conducted by Nagaland University, Department of Geology, Kohima Campus, Meriema during March 9 and 10.
The Chief Guest of the inaugural program was Prof. J.K. Patnaik, Vice-Chancellor, Nagaland University. Prof. Vikoleno Rino, Head of the Department and the chairperson of the workshop gave the welcome address and also shared a brief profile of the Department. Dr. A. Patra, the coordinator of the workshop outlined the theme and objectives of the workshop. Prof. J.K. Patnaik in his speech stressed on the importance of such workshops and encouraged the faculty members to conduct more of such academic events in future for dissemination of the recent research and development in the field of earth sciences especially in the North-Eastern region of the country. The co-coordinator of the workshop Prof. S.K. Srivastava proposed the vote of thanks. The inaugural program was chaired by Dr. Ch. MangiKhuman, Assistant Professor, Department of Geology, Nagaland University.
Altogether seven lectures were delivered by the resource persons. On March 9, Prof. (Retired) G.T. Thong, Nagaland University presented on the provenance of the Upper Disang sandstones, based on petrographic and geochemical evidence. Prof. Jayanta Jivan Laskar, Gauhati University discussed recent fluvial sedimentation in the intermontane basins of the Brahmaputra Valley. Prof. S.K. Srivastava, Nagaland University discussed the role of trace fossils in understanding the depositional environments and palaeo-climate.

On the second day, Prof. B.P. Singh, Banaras Hindu University focused on lithofacies analysis of the western Himalayan foreland basin and its correlation with the Assam foreland basin. Dr. Gaurav Srivastava, Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeosciences, Lucknow presented on the use of fossil leaves to reconstruct ancient climates. Prof. Y. Raghumani Singh, Manipur University addressed relationships between palynofacies and depositional environments in Meghalaya, Northeast India. The last lecture of the two days’ workshop was delivered by Dr. Temsulemba Walling, Nagaland University on hydrocarbons in Palaeogene sediments of Mokokchung district, Nagaland.
At the valedictory function, Dean, School of Sciences, Prof. S.K. Singh encouraged the participant to apply the experience and knowledge that they have obtained from this workshop for their future research. The two days regional workshop was concluded by vote of thanks proposed by Dr. Kenisazo Nagi, Department of Geology, Nagaland University.
The two-day regional workshop brought together teachers, scientists, and research scholars to discuss sedimentology, palaeontology, palynology, and related applications for reconstructing depositional environments and palaeoclimate.
