The inaugural ceremony of the 19th ASAN conference Organised by the Agricultural Students’ Association of Nagaland (ASAN) under the theme ‘Rejuvenate Agriculture: Leadership building and entrepreneurship’ was held today at the Multipurpose hall, School of Agricultural Sciences (SAS), Medziphema.
Mhathung Yanthan, Advisor for Agriculture, Govt. of Nagaland in his speech stated that people are still satisfied with conventional farming methods, though the world has progressed in artificial intelligence and modern technologies.
Yanthan, who was also a student of agriculture, highlighted that Nagaland is experiencing a growing number of agro-horticulture entrepreneurs, even though most of them do not have an agricultural background and encouraged students to consider turning agriculture into a business and pursue entrepreneurship in this field.
Pointing out that many graduates has passed out from agriculture institutes, however many strive only for government jobs, Yanthan termed it as a ‘’sick society’’ with such mind set.
“Hosting such conferences of this nature is essential for students, as it provides them the opportunity to exchange their ideas and experiences, establish connections, and form partnerships with various sectors and broaden their horizons,” said Yanthan.
The Advisor encouraged the gathering to introspect on the profession that they were pursuing and develop their skills and passion and help the agriculture community as a whole, adding that Nagaland economy could only thrive through agriculture.
The exhortation was delivered by Pro-vice Chancellor, NU :SAS, Dr Akali Sema who urged the agricultural students to think outside the box in the midst of the fast developing technology, and challenge. Dr Sema maintained that the world needs youths in agriculture and urged the members to grab hold of the opportunities provided to them.
