The Kigwema Students’ Union (KSU) began its 75 years anniversary celebration today under the theme “Towards a sustainable future”. The event was held at Kholera, Kigwema.

The Introductory session was graced by Medo Yhokha, Former MLA & Advisor, Government of Nagaland, where he dwelt on three topics under a sustainable future. The first topic centered around the socio and geopolitical future, where Yhokha emphasised on the need of a village to have one story, and not multiple narratives. “What do people say of you as a village?” asked Yhokha to the gathering. Basing on the celebration theme, he stated that specific goals should be charted out for different groups such a khels, women group, youth organisations etc. for attaining results for a sustainable future.

The second area focused on education and life skills. Here, Yhokha stated on the need for change of attitude in terms of jobs to prevent many from becoming a liability to the society. With the growing need for more skill oriented education, Yhokha advised the gathering explore new avenues instead of relying on the government. “Your degree only qualifies you for competition with many others,” stated the former MLA. Instancing that the competition has become stiffer in any sector, Yhokha quipped that the competition is even narrower at the Grade 4 level of jobs. With this, he also reminded that the Nagaland Government is now focused on infrastructure, vocational and life skills.

Yhokha also reflected on the need for role models especially in the Government service.

“The role of AI is going to change the world. It has the power to influence people’s thought instead of the other way around,” apprised Yhokha to the young crowd encouraging them to tactfully navigate through the power of AI.

The third area of concern that the former MLA spoke on was Environment. “There is no alternative to nature. The idea of sustainability is pertinent here. Because we have rich resources there is a bigger need for us to conserve our environmental resources,” asserted Yhokha.

The contribution of a small village or region was emphasised where he said, “The initiatives may not produce instant results or stop environmental degradation suddenly but it will make an impact.”

Assuring that it is not too late, Yhokha noted that renewing our view and action towards conservation and sustainability is a gift for future generation. The speaker also delved on the diversity of organizations contributing to leadership, acknowledging potential confusion but highlighting the positive impact each has in its own way. Supporting one’s village identity and fostering leadership with a collaborative approach, to encourage mutual upliftment, was also highlighted.

The commemoration of the 75 years anniversary will be held from December 29 and 30. Salhoutuonuo Kruse, Minister, Women Resource Development & Horticulture will grace the inaugural session as the Special Guest while NCS Vikhweno Chale, Deputy Director, Admin, NIMSR, will be the Valedictory guest on December 30.
