The Rengma Selo Zi (RSZ) commemorated its ninth anniversary and 3rd General Assembly on May 4.

The event was held at RSU Ground, K Station in Tseminyu District under the theme, “Beyond Us: Redefining our Future” hosted by the Kandi Group Youth Organisation.

MLA Jewang’s Seb, gracing the event as the honoured guest commended the RSZ as a luminary force promoting the ideals of change for the well-being and rights of the community. Exploring on the theme, Seb stated in his address, “Our forefathers taught us that nothing worthy comes without effort. This wisdom reminds us that in our fight against social evils, shortcuts or reckless measures are not only unsustainable but could potentially lead to greater losses. As we advocate for change and betterment, let us ensure that our methods and systems honour the sweat and sacrifices of those who walked before us. Respect for our elders and the preservation of our communal assets are not merely social obligations but are intrinsic values that define us”.

He highlighted the significance of understanding that the future is not build through chances but through conscious intentions and undertakings.

He further adds that possessing such ideals help to create a space where individualism and independence is promoted whilst also promoting empathy so as to foster a sustainable future for generations to come.

Seb also mentioned the crucial role that youth groups have in society. He regarded these groups as a medium where the growth of vigour, fervour and vision is actively seen and encouraged these groups to actively participate in bridging gaps, further adding the vitality and necessity of Democracy and its doctrines, promoting the fundamentals and implications of equality and equity. Seb also addressed the youth as the leaders of today and that their dedicated intentions hold the ability to shape the future for generations to come. He, therefore, challenged the youths to redefine it whilst remaining rooted in empathy and continuing the rich legacy left behind.

Special Guest, Dr. A Ngasho, Director Hr. Education Department stated that the youths play an indispensable role in building a society and hence, they are the catalyst to a constructive development of a society. He urged the youth to prioritise education as it provides empowerment through knowledge to build a sustainable future. The Special Guest also encouraged them to make use of their passion, skills and individuality to create a society that may produce a purposeful outcome for its people.

Dr. A Ngasho also delved on the two separated Rengma societies -one residing in Assam, who are less in population with the larger land and the larger population in Nagaland with the smaller land and recounts how before the pre-British period, the Rengma Nagas was one of the largest populations consisting of land mass of more than 9000 square kilometres known as the “Rengma Hills”.

He lamented that the Rengmas have become a loss community because of the transfer of land and people in 1898 to the neighbouring District of Assam and the reorganisation of North Eastern States after India’s Independence leaving a land mass of only 256 sq.kms from Tseminyu District and a major difference in Assam for the Rengma Hills, a land mass of 8724 sq. Kms.
