Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio on Wednesday urged for patience as the commission reviewing the state’s contentious reservation policy has a detailed task and cannot submit its report immediately.

According to local newspaper reports, CM Rio said this on the sidelines of an event in Kohima. The chief minister is also stated to have maintained the Cabinet’s resolve to take reforms regarding administration, reservation and delimitation after the conduct of the national Census, which is scheduled to start by 2027.

The reports also cited Rio as saying the state government does not intend to make any temporary arrangements regarding the reservation policy but aims to address and settle issues comprehensively.

On June 30, the 5 Tribes Committee on Review of Reservation Policy (CoRRP) reiterated its core demands – either to scrap the existing Reservation Policy or to allocate the unreserved quota to the five tribes (Ao, Angami, Sumi, Lotha and Rengma) while expressing concern over the inaction of the state government despite the Cabinet’s decision to set up a commission to review the Reservation Policy.

The committee had urged the state government to act decisively and transparently in addressing the long-standing concerns. It also reaffirmed that it stands committed to constructive engagement but reserves the right to initiate appropriate democratic measures if the issues remain unaddressed within a reasonable timeframe.
