In a pioneering initiative to combat malnutrition and anaemia, the Government of Nagaland, in partnership with PATH, conducted a captivating awareness and sensitisation program on fortified rice in the Public Distribution System (PDS). Dispelling fears of plastic rice, experts clarified that the fortified rice was designed to tackle malnutrition effectively.
The event, held at the vibrant Town Hall in Mokokchung on August 5, 2023 witnessed a compelling presentation by Shanpanthung Ezung, the State Technical Officer, Family Health Department from PATH. He enlightened the attendees about food fortification’s pivotal role in enhancing nutritional quality and public health benefits.
Highlighting the alarming statistics from the National Family Health Survey, Ezung emphasized the urgency of the fortified rice program. With 58.4% of children between 6 to 59 months anaemic and 35.7% underweight, the need for action was crystal clear.

Nagaland, facing a significant challenge with anaemia, saw an upsurge in prevalence according to the North-Eastern Region Districts Sustainable Development Goal Index. The report underscored areas requiring greater attention, including Kiphire, Longleng, Phek, Peren and Dimapur.
Fortified rice emerged as a strategic solution to address this nutritional crisis. With rice being a staple for 70% of Indians, it provides the ideal platform to meet dietary needs effectively. The addition of essential vitamins and minerals, including iron, folic acid, and vitamin B12, ensures a substantial nutritional boost for consumers without compromising on taste or cooking ease.
The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from various stakeholders, including Fair Price Shop dealers, All Ward Union Mokokchung Town, Village Council Chairmen, and Civil Society Organizations. Their engagement in the interactive session showcased the community’s eagerness to tackle anaemia and malnutrition head-on.
Jamonger Ao, Assistant Director of Food and Civil Supplies, Mokokchung, expressed the importance of dispelling misconceptions and promoting the positive impact of fortified rice. He urged attendees to embrace the health benefits this initiative offers.
This pioneering step to fortify rice in the PDS is set to revolutionise public health in Nagaland. With the +F logo now adorning the fortified rice packages, it marks a new chapter in the fight against anaemia.
