Outgoing Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio met with Governor La Ganesan at Kohima Raj Bhavan on Saturday and tendered his resignation.

Rio broke the news on Twitter where he wrote, “As my tenure has come to an end, I submitted letter of resignation as Chief Minister of Nagaland to the Hon’ble Governor, Shri @LaGanesan ji.” However there was no mention of him claiming stake to form the government.

The four time CM is set to take on another term as his party, Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party, unanimously elected him as the legislature party leader in a meeting held on Friday at the party’s central office.

The leaders of BJP, the alliance party, had repeatedly stated that Rio was their chief ministerial candidate if the NDPP led BJP government returns to power for a second term in the state.

Neiphiu Rio and other leaders of his party are said to be leaving for Delhi in the following days to meet with the BJP high command. The swearing-in is likely to take place on 7 March, after their return.
