Salhoutuonuo and Hekani, pioneers in breaking gender barrier in Nagaland’s political landscape, complete 1 yr as MLAs

Kohima: Hekani thanks CM and “all our men who assured that we break the glass ceiling”

Hekani Jakhalu and Salhoutuonuo Kruse created history one year ago on 2nd March 2023 when the election results for the 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly were declared. The elections were earlier conducted on 27th February 2023.

Hekani Jakhalu made history by becoming the first woman to be elected to the 60-member Nagaland Assembly. She won Dimapur-III constituency in the 2023 Nagaland Assembly by defeating sitting MLA Azheto Zhimomi by 1,536 votes.

Hekani Jakhalu is currently Advisor, Industries & Commerce, Government of Nagaland.

“Today Madam @k_salhoutuonuo & I complete one year in office. A day when Naga women were liberated from we can’t to we CAN-that we can led from the front too & our girls can dream big,” Jakhalu stated in a celebratory post X. She also thanked Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and “all our men who assured that we break the glass ceiling.”

Salhoutuonuo Kruse defeated Keneizhakho Nakhro, an independent candidate, by only seven votes to bag the Western Angami seat.

Later, she became the first female Minister in the history of Nagaland when she was given the portfolio of Women Resource Development & Horticulture.
