The Sangtam Union Mokokchung Town celebrated Mungmung Festival on 3 September at Multi Sports Complex, Mokokchung.
Mungmung which means ‘togetherness forever’ is a pre-harvest festival celebrated by the Sangtam Nagas in the first week of September.
The program, hosted by Muili Sangtam and Akangkokla Sangtam, saw traditional fire craft, folk dance of the Sangtams, and a display of top spinning accompanied by a variety of performances like folk songs, display of cultural attire and special presentation.
Longdiba Sangtam, SDO (Civil) Mokokchung; Yangsomong, President of ENPUM; Chubawati, President of Ao Senden; and Dr Likhase Sangtam, Assistant Professor, Dept of Political Science, NU along with other dignitaries were present at the function.
Longdiba Sangtam encouraged the Sangtam people to always stay united and strive forward in togetherness to uplift the morale of the community. Yangsomong, President of ENPUM and Chubawati, President of Ao Senden also challenged the community to keep working hard, to preserve one’s identity, and to have a wider scope and perspective to excel and achieve greater things in life.
Dr Likhase Sangtam delivered the significance of Mungmung and highlighted how the present pattern and practice of Mungmung festive differ from the days of the forefathers. He emphasized that Mungmung is a festival where people come together and learn from each other to build relation among family and community.
The event ended with a cultural feast, filled with a variety of authentic Naga dishes.
