The Department of Sociology of Sao Chang College organised a field trip to Konya Village, an area known for its coal mining activities, on Wednesday.

The trip was accompanied by faculty members of the Sociology Department, including Assistant Professor Hotoni, who explained that the primary objective of the visit was to provide students with practical exposure to the socio-economic realities of communities living in mining areas. She said the exercise aimed to help students connect theoretical concepts learned in the classroom with real-life experiences in the field.

During the visit, the group was assisted by a local guide who explained the significant impact of coal mining on the lives of villagers, particularly how mining activities have influenced the local economy and brought structural changes within the community.

According to the guide, coal mining has become a major source of livelihood for many households in the village, providing employment opportunities and generating income for the local population. However, the guide also pointed out the environmental consequences of coal mining, including land degradation and challenges faced by villagers due to the changing landscape.

The field trip served as an important academic exercise for the students, enabling them to observe and understand how resource extraction activities such as coal mining influence the economic conditions and social organisation of rural communities.
