The Southern Angami Youth Organization (SAYO) has today demanded the NHIDCL and concerned authorities to repair and maintain the roads and bridges along the NH-29 Kohima-Mao route. It also served a 15 days ultimatum for immediate redressal, warning that failure to comply will compel the Organization to prohibit vehicular movement along the National Highway.
In a press release, the SAYO expressed deep concern and frustration over the ongoing road construction and resurfacing work on the NH-29/ NH -2 Kohima-Mao road. Despite repeated requests and appeals, the NHIDCL (National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited) and various authorities have failed to address the deteriorating condition of the road, which has become a serious safety hazard, stated the communique issued by Metekhrielie Mejura, President and Metevizo Sophie, General Secretary.
“The SAYO is particularly concerned about the lack of accountability and transparency in the ongoing work. The NHIDCL has not followed the DPR (Detailed Project Report) norms, and the work has been carried out randomly, without any proper planning or supervision. This has led to the dilapidation of the road again before the completion of the ongoing work,” asserted the Organization.

Despite the significance of the NH-29/NH-2 which not only serves as a lifeline for the Southern Angami area but also as a catalyst for trade and commerce between Manipur and South East Asian countries, the road has been neglected, and its condition deplorable. “The bridge between Viswema – Jakhama NH-2 is critical and on the verge of collapsing, posing a serious threat to human life, security, and vehicle movement,” highlighted the SAYO
The SAYO has, therefore, demanded immediate action from the authorities to address this issue. Urging the NHIDCL and authorities to take immediate measures to repair and maintain the road and the bridge, the SAYO warned that failure to do so will result in a total prohibition of any vehicle movement within the National Highway. “The SAYO holds the NHIDCL, concerned authorities, and contractors responsible for any eventuality that may occur. We request your authority to treat this matter as urgent on top priority within 15 days of this publication and take immediate action to address this issue and ensure that the road and the bridge are restored to the safety for the commuters,” demanded the Organisation.
The SAYO has also requested the Governor of Nagaland and Chief Minister of Nagaland and State Government Authorities to exercise their authorities and take appropriate measures to issue necessary directives against the NHIDCL and contractor.
“We hope that your urgent attention to this matter will bring about a swift resolution to this crisis and ensure the safety and well-being of our citizens,” stated the press release.
