The Southern Angami Youth Organisation (SAYO) has drawn the attention of the Executive Director of National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) regional office to expedite the restoration of landslide-hit National Highway-29 at Phesama village, under Jakhama sub-division in Kohima district.
In a memorandum to the NHIDCL, while acknowledging the ongoing efforts of NHIDCL in addressing the damage and initiating repair work at the said location, expressed concern over the slow pace of progress. The youth body said its officials have made several site visits and have observed that engagement of labour force is very less.
SAYO pointed out that by Ref.No.PVC-17/DISASTER/2021-2025 Dt.05.07.2025, the Phesama Village Council has issued No Objection Certificate-III towards land acquisition for restoration of the NH stretch at the earliest.
The organisation underscored that at least a one-way road pliable by heavy vehicles should be restored as immediate relief/temporary measures until finalization and completion of the road.

Maintaining the importance of the NH, SAYO pointed out that the particular stretch of the highway serves as a critical inter-state route connecting Nagaland and Manipur, and the prolonged closure since the beginning of June this year has caused severe inconvenience to students, commuters, commercial transport, and the general public.
“Given the strategic and public importance of this road, we humbly urge your esteemed office to expedite the ongoing restoration work by deploying additional manpower, machinery, and technical support. A timely completion of the repair will not only restore vital connectivity but also prevent further deterioration of the affected area, especially during this monsoon season,” the SAYO stated in the memorandum.
In a separate letter to the Extra Assistant Commissioner (EAC) Kezocha, the youth organization requested proposal for repairing of roads to appropriate authority for Chakhabama-Mao Road, especially the stretch between Kidima village and Kezo town, without delay.
SAYO highlighted that on June 21, youth leaders carried out a survey on the prevailing road conditions in Southern Angami areas and have observed that some portion of the roads and drainages between the mentioned stretches are in dire condition for vehicles to ply and need immediate attention. It also pointed out that while SAYO officials were surveying and inspecting the roads, it was noticed that the Senapati Truckers’ Union from Senapati, Manipur were taking the initiatives to repair the roads.
SAYO maintained it was a huge concern that another state is undertaking such steps while the concerned state government is remaining idle, neglecting the region.
Towards this, SAYO called upon the concerned authorities for immediate intervention.
