In a landmark move for financial accessibility, the State Bank of India (SBI) inaugurated its first-ever branch in Pughoboto, a vibrant town in Nagaland’s Zunheboto district, on 21st February 2025. The event marks a transformative step for the entire Pughoboto subdivision which previously relied on distant banks in other districts such as Tseminyu and Kohima for formal banking services.
Residents and small businesses often faced arduous journeys for basic services like loans, savings accounts, or government subsidy disbursements. Despite its growing population and economic potential, the absence of a major banking institution hindered financial access for many. The new branch is set to improve access to essential banking services and open up a new set of varied opportunities for the people of Pughoboto.
MLA representing the 13 A/C Pughoboto, Dr. Sukhato A. Sema, unveiled the inauguration plaque in the presence of Lokho Peter, Regional Manager, SBI, Regional Business Office Mokokchung and ADC Pughoboto, Tiameren Chang. The event was graced with speeches from the MLA, ADC Pughoboto and Regional Manager, SBI.
The inaugural program was held at Pughoboto Town Hall which was witnessed by Government officials, Community leaders, SBI officials and the general public. Rev. Fr. Inashe Paul, Parish Priest St. Francis of Assisi Church, Lazami pronounced the invocation, while the welcome address was delivered by Adakho Khrashi, Chief Manager SBI Zunheboto Main Branch. Vice Chairman Pughoboto Adhoc Town Council, Hokiqhe G Sheqi gave the vote of thanks, while Pastor Ahovi of Pughoboto Town Baptist Church blessed the event with a benediction.
