Script for Pankaj Kumar’s film ‘Konyak’ inspires ₹100 crore production

Panaji: ‘Konyak’ shines as a powerful cinematic journey that blends cultural depth with universal themes of survival, honor, and redemption

Pankaj Kumar’s feature directorial debut ‘Konyak’ garnered unprecedented attention at the Film Bazaar 2024 at the recently concluded 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) organized by the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC). The film’s script has inspired a major ₹100 crore production, backed by film producers, the PIB reported.

The feature film was among the six projects of various genres had been selected for the 18th edition of NFDC Screenwriters’ Lab, an initiative to develop, nurture, and promote original voices from all over India.

About the film: “On the fringe of civilization, amidst Nagaland’s unforgiving beauty, a deadly feud erupts between legendary headhunting tribes. Young warrior Thungpang Konyak, burdened by prophetic visions and haunted by betrayal, embarks on a relentless chase to protect his community and reclaim honor, confronting his former friend turned mortal enemy Sangba, as brother turns against brother in a brutal struggle for survival.”

Written by Uddhav Ghosh, ‘Konyak’ is Pankaj Kumar’s feature directorial debut. Best known for his visually immersive work in ‘Tumbbad’ as a cinematographer, Pankaj Kumar this time brings his storytelling expertise to ‘Konyak’. Expressing his excitement about the film, he stated, “Konyak is more than just an action story; it’s a visceral exploration of Nagaland’s legends, community, and unforgiving terrain. With this film, we aim to craft a cinematic experience that breathes life into the untamed spirit of its setting.”

With a script mentored by international expert Claire Dobbin, ‘Konyak’ shined as a powerful cinematic journey that blends cultural depth with universal themes of survival, honor, and redemption. Screenwriters’ Lab mentor, Claire praised the script, calling ‘Konyak’ “a compelling story of betrayal, courage, and resilience that shines a light on a little-known but unforgettable people, the Konyak.”

The Lab provided the platform for Uddhav Ghosh to deepen his narrative, blending action with folklore and magic realism while staying rooted in the historical and cultural context of the region. With its blend of rich cultural heritage, magical realism, and a compelling storyline, the film promises to captivate audiences worldwide, further highlighting the crucial role of initiatives like Film Bazaar in elevating Indian cinema to global standards.
