Deputy Commissioner Kohima Shanavas C, IAS, in his address mentioned that the status of the girl child and women is much better in Nagaland as compared to other states in the country. He also pointed that the long practice of female foeticide and infanticide has come down and with the change of time families who wanted a boy child now prefer girl child.
Emphasising on the need and importance of learning self-defence lessons DC Shanavas said that many a times girls feel scared when it comes to security because there is an inbuilt notion that they cannot protect themselves like boys. “This has to be changed, you need to be confident of yourselves,” he exhorted the girl students at the event.
Stressing on the importance of developing confidence Shanavas said, “when you are confident, you are free; when you are confident, you are able to protect yourselves; if you have confidence, it reflects on your face and no one will dare to do anything,” he said, “but if your face gives an impression that you are so scared, that you are fearful then it is easy for an attacker and for anyone who is trying to do harm.”
The Deputy Commissioner added that self-defence is not a lesson that can be acquired in a day and that it needs a lot of courage, consistency, discipline and mental fitness and urged the students to be persistent and passionate about their goals. He also encouraged the students to keep fighting to overcome the power of giving up.
“Don’t wait for anyone to protect you because you can protect yourself,” he added.
The self-defence class had been launched with an aim to help girls feel confident and empowered, to ensure the safety and security of girls and to promote their education. The techniques or moves included for the self-defence crash course are Escape from a bear hug attack, Escape from hands trapped, Escape from side headlock, Groin Kick, Striking, Blocking and Heel palm strike.
