Shiksha Saptah (Education Week): Schools across Nagaland observe Sports Day

Kohima: Day’s event aimed to generate awareness about physical fitness, promote healthy lifestyle

Along with the rest of the country, government and private schools across Nagaland are participating in the week-long Shiksha Sapta (Education Week) from 22 to 27 July 2024, in commemoration of four years of the National Education Policy (2020), informed Communications Team, Nagaland Education Project – The Lighthouse (NECTAR).

In line with the theme of Day 3, Sports Day was held in schools all over Nagaland. A special event was organised at Government Middle School, D Khel in Kohima district; it was a day filled with activities that yielded fun and learning beyond the classrooms for students and teachers alike.

The day saw students avidly participating in various games and sports. Special focus was given to traditional games and sports such as wrestling, stilt walking, wood karting, and spinning top. Besides traditional games, the students also took part in basketball, volleyball, and cockfights, among others.

Temsunaro Aier, State Mission Director, Samagra Shiksha, in her address to the school, emphasised the importance of sports for the holistic development of students. She stated that sports enhance mental calibre as well as build-team spirit, healthy competition, and character in an individual.

The Mission Director also impressed upon the teachers to give equal importance to sports and co-curricular activities as recommended by the National Education Policy.

Dr. Kevi Rio, Joint Mission Director, Samagra Shiksha, summarised the concept of the week-long event to the students of GMS D Khel and congratulated them for their active participation. Kelhikha Kenye, Deputy Mission Director, Samagra Shiksha, exhorted the students and actively led them in the games and sports.

The day’s event aimed to generate awareness about physical fitness and promote a healthy lifestyle for the all-round growth and development of the students. The Department of School Education expresses its appreciation to all the schools across Nagaland for making the event a success.

Upcoming events include Cultural Day, Skilling Day, Eco Clubs for Mission LiFE, and Community Involvement Day. The week-long event will culminate on Saturday.
