SJC, Department of ‘Sociology Gives Back’ at Jo Foundation Inclusive School

Kohima: Achumi, Assistant Professor stated that the initiative is one of the best practises of the department

The Department of Sociology, St. Joseph’s College (A) Jakhama conducted its annual charity drive ‘Sociology Gives Back’, with the final year students of the department from both Postgraduate and Undergraduate studies.

Five teachers and 150 students from the department visited Jo Foundation Inclusive School, Agri Colony, Kohima on Saturday. During the short program conducted at the school, the Administrator of the school, Kheyokhole Ltu gave a brief sharing on the school and why it is important to have an inclusive school.

Alibo Achumi, Assistant Professor, SJC(A) spoke on the vision and purpose of the Sociology Gives Back’ initiative. While acknowledging the efforts of the students, she also stated that the initiative is one of the best practises of the department.

She added that over the years, the department was able to help many NGOs, namely, Bright Morning Star Orphanage, Akumdong Welfare Fund for Cancer Patient, Cradle Ridge for HIV AIDS patients, Old Age Home, YouthNet, Operation Rescue Nagaland, cancer patients in Naga Hospital, people living below poverty line, orphans and destitute in Jakhama Village, poor students and parents of a department and 4th grade staffs of St. Joseph College and many more.

This year they identified three beneficiaries based on their needs, visions and missions. They were:

1. Imkonglemla, a 6th semester student of their own department suffering from fourth stage breast cancer. A sum of Rs.15,000 was donated towards her treatment.

2. The Miraculum society, Nagaland. A recently formed NGO founded by a student of their own department again Vikuonuo Sachu, who was also former Miss Nagaland in 2020-2021, whose vision was to work for child support, education, youth empowerment and community development. A sum of Rs.25,000 was donated towards the NGO.

3. Jo Foundation Inclusive School that started with a vision to care and nurture the differently abled children and integrate them with normal society, empowered with skills and knowledge to face any challenges that comes their way. ‘Sociology Gives Back’ donated a sum of Rs. 50,000 towards the school infrastructural development fund.
