Sociology Gives Back: SJC Socio Dept undertakes community outreach

As part of its commitment to social responsibility and community outreach, the Department of Sociology, St. Joseph’s College (Autonomous) Jakhama, carried out several acts of charity and support under the Sociology Gives Back initiative. These contributions were directed toward individuals and organizations in need, reflecting our ongoing mission to foster empathy and action through academic engagement, informed a press release from the Department.

 

Beneficiaries under “Sociology Gives Back, 2025”

The students of 4th Semester PG and 6th Semester UG from the department of Sociology raised the amount of ₹1,55,780 for this year’s edition of Sociology Gives Back. The following are the beneficiaries and the contributions made:

Noklak District Fire Victims: ₹25,000

An amount of ₹25,000 was contributed to assist five families from Noklak who were in critical need of support due to the fire tragedy that burnt down their houses.

Myanmar Earthquake Relief: ₹20,000

In response to the devastating earthquake that affected regions in Myanmar, a sum of ₹20,000 was donated toward relief efforts to help the victims recover and rebuild.

PAPA Foundation: ₹20,000

A total of ₹20,000 was donated to the PAPA Foundation to support their ongoing initiatives for helping the student communities especially those who lost their father and are orphans.

Admission and fee for 2nd Semester Undergraduate Student: ₹21,000

A financial contribution of ₹21,000 was provided to support a student of the 2ndsemester undergraduate program from the department of sociology, aiding in continuing their education during a time of need.

Tabitha Enabling Academy: ₹50,000

An amount of ₹50,000 was donated to Tabitha Enabling Academy to support their mission of empowering individuals with disabilities and providing inclusive education.

Total Contributions made: ₹1,36,000

A short programme was held at Tabitha Enabling Academy (TEA) for Sociology Gives Back activity site visit. The program was chaired by Benji Semp of (Tabitha Enabling Academy),  followed by a warm welcome address by Vekutily Vese Ngone, (co-proprietor of TEA). She gave a brief introduction of the academy, the faculty members, and their efforts in nurturing children with special needs. Dr. Hormila G. Zingkhai, (Coordinator of the Sociology Department) at SJC (A), delivered a speech on behalf of the Deaprtment. She explained the background of the “Sociology Gives Back” initiative, noting that it is a tradition passed down through generations of sociology students.

The program featured a choreography performed by the hearing-impaired students of Tabitha Enabling Academy, based on a Bible verse and was followed by a special solo song by Anguzo Kense. A group song was then presented by the 6th Semester students UG students of the Sociology Department, Mhabeni Ngullie, representing the students, delivered a speech highlighting the efforts made by the department in raising funds through small business initiatives and food sales. She expressed sincere gratitude for the opportunity to collaborate with Tabitha Enabling Academy and contribute to its mission. The program concluded with a mass prayer.

The group also visited The PAPA Foundation Office at Billy Graham Road and handed over the cash to the Director as well as had a meaningful discussion about the initiatives of the foundation, informed the press release.
