Soyim Shisaluyimer Telongjem (SST) celebrated Teachers’ Day 2024 at Yimtsüngta Arok Sapang, Ungma, under the theme “Empowering Educators: Strengthening Resilience, Building Sustainability.” The event, held at noon, was graced by the presence of S. Arenla Longkumer, President of Watsu Mungdang, as the Guest Speaker.

In her address, the guest speaker, Longkumer, spoke passionately about the profound impact that teachers have on society. She began by emphasizing that “education is not just about learning within the four walls of a classroom; it is also about learning from the world outside.” She highlighted that the efforts made by teachers in sowing the seeds of knowledge are never in vain, stating, “The real harvest for teachers is when they see their students succeed in life.”

Longkumer acknowledged the crucial role teachers play in the all-around development of a child, urging educators not to focus solely on bookish knowledge. “Teachers should guide and lead their students spiritually and holistically,” she remarked. She described a teacher as much more than a mere instructor, noting, “A teacher is not just a ‘teacher’; he or she is a role model for the students.”

She further elaborated on the significant influence teachers have on their students’ lives, saying, “A teacher plays a vital role in a student’s life. Students look up to them; the lifestyle they live directly or indirectly influences their students.”

As she continued, Longkumer celebrated teachers as the “unsung heroes” of society, pouring their hearts and souls into shaping young minds, instilling values, and guiding them toward a brighter future. She commended their dedication, patience, and passion, describing them as the cornerstones of the education system. “You go above and beyond to make learning fun, engaging, and accessible to all. Your tireless efforts have helped us become the individuals we are today, and we are forever grateful,” she stated.

Longkümer expressed her gratitude for the daily sacrifices made by teachers, including early mornings, long hours, and endless paperwork, all of which, she said, are worth it because “you know that you’re making a difference.” She thanked the teachers for being role models, mentors, and friends to the children, for igniting their curiosity, creativity, and imagination, and for believing in them even when they doubt themselves.

The program commenced with an opening act performed by the CTC students, under the guidance of Tamalong, setting a tone of respect and admiration for the educators. Sapangjungla Longkumer, Women Coordinator of SST, led the event as the Chairlady. This was followed by an invocation by Chuba Jamir, Associate Pastor of UBA, invoking blessings for the teachers and the program.

Rongsen T Imsong, President of SST, delivered the greetings, highlighting the significance of the day and expressing gratitude to all teachers for their valuable commitment to nurturing future generations. An ode to teachers was presented by Mount Moriah School, followed by a heartfelt rendition of “Stand by Me” by the Soyim Students Union, Mokokchung unit.
