The Multi-Purpose Sport Complex in Mokokchung came alive with the thunderous cheers of fans as the 2nd Inter-Ward Volleyball Tournament 2023 commenced today. Organized by the spirited Kumlong Sporting Association and supported by the Mokokchung District Volleyball Association (MDVA), the event promises to be a riveting showcase of athleticism and camaraderie.
With an electrifying inaugural ceremony, Guest of Honour, Temjenmenba, Advisor of Transport and Technical Education, Government of Nagaland, emphasized the pivotal role of discipline in sports and urged players to embrace dedication in pursuing their passions. He encouraged aspiring athletes to view sports not only as a path to professionalism but also as a means of livelihood. His words resonated with the crowd, reinforcing the idea that sports can shape lives and futures.
Earlier, Dr Imlinichet Imchen, the Convenor of the organizing committee in his welcome address highlighted the association’s unwavering commitment to “Forging Champions,” providing a platform for young talents to shine on the volleyball court. The stakes were raised even higher as it was announced that the champion of Inter-Ward Volleyball Tournament would secure a direct entry into the prestigious Imchaba Memorial Volleyball Trophy, further motivating the teams to give it their all.
A total of nine wards entered the arena, each with their eyes set on victory and glory. The opening clash between defending champions, Sungkomen, and Mongsenbai ward set the tone for an intense competition. Mongsenbai made an impressive start, leading the first set with a score of 25-17. However, Sungkomen showcased their resilience and experience, clinching the next two sets with scores of 30-28 and 25-14, securing a triumphant comeback.
In a nail-biting second match, Majakong and Penli went head-to-head. Penli displayed sheer determination, securing the first set 25-17, while Majakong fought valiantly in the second set. Penli ultimately emerged victorious with a close score of 26-24.
The third match between Lijaba Lijen and Alempang had spectators on the edge of their seats. Lijaba dominated the first set with a score of 25-13, but Alempang staged an impressive turnaround, claiming the second set 25-22. The deciding set was a heart-pounding exchange, with Lijaba prevailing by a slender margin of 25-23. The spotlight shone brightly on Lanuakum from Lijaba, a retired Indian Army personnel, who emerged as the star of the match.
The day’s excitement peaked with a rematch of last year’s final in the fourth match of the day, as Sungkomen faced off against Artang. Despite Sungkomen’s formidable blocking, Artang’s dynamic duo, Tamalepden and Imsentoba, proved to be the driving force. Artang secured the first two sets, winning 25-19 and 26-24 respectively.
The Inter-Ward Volleyball Tournament will culminate on 11 August 2023.
