The Ongpangkong Students’ Conference (OKM) and the Mokokchung College of Teacher Education Students’ Union (MCTESU) have separately raised concerns regarding transfer of professors from two leading colleges in Mokokchung district.

Recently, the department of higher and technical education, Government of Nagaland ordered the transfer of twelve professors from colleges in Kohima, Wokha and Mokokchung districts to two colleges namely, New Model College, Wakching, Mon and New Model College, Mangkolemba, Mokokchung.

As per the 9 May order, five of the twelve professors being transferred are from Fazl Ali College while two are from Mokokchung College of Teacher Education.

OKM in its letter to the department stated that the transfers will create acute shortage of manpower in the colleges and disturb the higher education ecosystem in the district. It therefore appealed that the order be revoked.

MCTESU, in its letter, too appealed for the order to be revoked. Highlighting that the MCTE has only seven regular teacher educators, it said that the transfer of its two professors ‘will not only affect the normal functioning of the college but will also lead to the de-recognition of our college for not fulfilling the NCTE norms where the minimum regular faculty for B.Ed College should be seven.’

‘…. infact we need recruitment of more teachers to strengthen the college,” the students stated.

The union further said that the college is preparing for NAAC assessment in 2024 and that requested not to deprive it of the expertise and experience of the two professors.
