Member of Parliament, Lok Sabha, S Supongmeren Jamir on Saturday urged citizens to uphold the values of peace, unity and responsibility while calling for clean and competitive elections during the Golden Jubilee celebrations of Lake View Colony, Dimapur.

Addressing the gathering at Assisi Higher Secondary School, the MP said jubilee celebrations are not merely commemorative events but opportunities to renew commitment and vision for a better future. “Once we observe the golden jubilee or any kind of jubilee, if we can take the blessings, we can go ahead with prosperity. But if we fail to celebrate it meaningfully, things may go the other way,” he said, urging the colony residents to decide collectively what is best for their community.

Supongmeren highlighted that the jubilee was being celebrated with the theme “Peace and Well-being,” while the younger generation added their aspiration — “My Colony, My Future.” These two themes, he said, capture the essence of the celebration, representing both harmony among residents and the shared responsibility of building a better future.

He called upon parents and guardians to take an active role in nurturing the younger generation. “You have to be in a position to take responsibility for your beloved children,” he said, adding that this jubilee also places that responsibility upon the youth to live up to the values of peace and cooperation.

Acknowledging the colony’s diverse population, the MP commended its residents for living peacefully for the past 50 years despite differences. He said although there might be some bad elements, this peace should continue.

The MP also said that the people should prevent the penetrations of “anti-elements, tribalism and clanism” in the colony and “if we can do so, we can maintain peace in the colony”.

Emphasizing the importance of healthy competition in a modern democratic society, Supongmeren said people often misunderstand the true spirit of competitiveness, particularly during elections. “Whatever elections—state, town council, or ward—we must have a competitive spirit to choose the best and most reasonable leaders. We need to change our mindset and not carry ill intentions,” he stated.

Reflecting on his own journey to the Lok Sabha, Supongmeren said his victory was the result of people’s trust and support cutting across party, class, and community lines. “I was nowhere, but people trusted me and voted for me. Irrespective of any party, color, or status, you all came forward willingly to elect me,” he recalled. He also commended the peaceful conduct of the elections and stressed that it stood as an example of clean and fair democratic practice.

He further appealed to citizens to replicate the same spirit of unity and responsibility in the upcoming 2028 State Assembly elections. “Let us ensure that elections are conducted peacefully and that people participate responsibly to elect 60 MLAs through a clean process,” he said.

Calling for active public participation in governance, the MP urged citizens to extend full cooperation to the ward authorities and district administration to ensure effective implementation of various government schemes. “For any kind of development, people have to coordinate with the councilors and district administration so that the benefits of government programs reach the people,” he emphasized.

Rev Dr Ellen Konyak Jamir, Associate Professor of Counseling, Oriental Theological Seminary spoke on the theme, “Peace and Wellbeing”, which DC Dimapur, Dr Tinojongshi Chang, Rev Dr Wati Aier, DMC Councillor, Ward 10, H Nikali Zhimo and representative of DUCCF also spoke on the occasion, besides Lipok Yaden who presented the Jubilee Planning report, M Shilu Jamir, GB, Lake View Colony and Lanusangba Aier, who gave the vote of thanks.
