Lok Sabha MP from Nagaland and President of the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC), Supongmeren Jamir has raised sharp questions about the state government’s handling of both financial accountability and border disputes with Assam.

On the ₹19.99 crore expenditure for Dimapur Town Hall, Jamir said the case is being pursued through an RTI filed by the Dimapur District Congress Committee and would soon be made public.

“Actually, the case was filed by our DCC, Dimapur. So, they are on the job. And this has to go very minutely because this is an account that matters. So, they are on the job and very soon, definitely they will bring to the light,” Supongmeren said while replying to queries on the sidelines of “Vote Chor, Gaddi Chhod” state level rally.

When reminded that RTI replies are supposed to be provided within one month, Jamir explained that further processes are required after obtaining the initial information. “These things take two to three stages, but the work is on,” he said.

Nagaland-Assam Border Tensions

Turning to the long-standing border dispute with Assam, particularly in Wokha district, Jamir criticized both the neutral forces and the state government.

He said the neutral forces are all stationed in Assam and they are supposed to guard all those boundaries. “But we are not keeping any support from the neutral forces for the state of Nagaland and secondly, our state government also…we are neglecting,” he said lamenting that the government takes up the matter only when there are issues.

Expressing gratitude to Deputy Chief Minister for intervening in the matter, Jamir said this should not be intervened when Assam has already exhibited that the land belongs to them. “So beforehand, state government has to come forward, but our state government is neglecting these issues,” he added.

Replying to a query whether infiltrations in the border areas would affect the people of Nagaland, he said, “No, definitely it will affect the whole state of Assam. And even now, our youths are facing problems. And not only the youths, but the interveners are also facing problems.  So, it is going to affect all the citizens of the state. So, definitely Congress will fight and we are also planning. We will be in touch with the state government and NGOs. Most of the time NGOs lead effectively, but the government must also come forward and support them.”
