President of the Seyochung Village Students’ Union (SVSU), Longtili C Sangtam recently had the privilege of engaging in a meaningful discussion with the Seyochung Village Mithun Committee. The committee, deeply rooted in tradition and guardianship of indigenous livestock, is dedicated to preserving the community’s cultural heritage.

During the discussion, Sangtam encouraged the committee to adopt more sustainable practices in fencing mithun grazing areas. Instead of cutting down trees to construct wooden fences, Sangtam suggested growing living fences by planting trees and shrubs. This approach would not only serve as natural boundaries but also restore greenery, prevent soil erosion, and preserve the precious forest cover.

Sangtam emphasized the importance of small shifts in practice that can become powerful acts of conservation, especially in the face of climate change and environmental degradation. By choosing to grow rather than cut, the community can honor both their land and their legacy.

The initiative reflects the community’s love for nature and their responsibility to future generations. Sangtam’s call to action encourages the community to work together towards a more sustainable future, preserving their cultural heritage while protecting the environment.
