Thang Students’ Union organises Open Penalty Shootout

Thang Students’ Union(TSU)  organised an Open Penalty Shootout 2025 on December 1 at Bechesouh Ground, Noklak Village with W Ngampa Konyak, Secretary Naga People’s Front ( NPF), Nagaland gracing the event as the special guest. The open penalty witnessed a strong turnout of enthusiastic participants competing into two categories – Men( 24 teams),  and women (6 teams) . The event had women players participating for the first time in a penalty shootout.

Stressing on the significance of sports in an individual’s life, Konyak said, “Sports is not just a one-day- play, but a daily life activity.”

Highlighting the recent performance of the Indian women cricket team whose exceptional sportsmanship led to victory, Konyak  emphasized on the quality a sports requires – discipline, punctuality, hardwork, and above all  humbleness  before God. He assured that today’s district level tournament can take to a state level and beyond in the future. He encouraged the players that Football fraternity is a livelihood is taken seriously.

Konyak also reminded the strong brotherhood bond that is shared between the Konyak and Khiamniungan community.

General Secretary, TSU, Khumeng, in his address explained the motive towards organizing the Open Penalty Shootout( Boys & Girls) which aims  to offer equal justice emphasizing every perspectives which is a prelude to the upcoming TSU  63rd General Session Cum Young Leaders Meet. He also informed of providing a platform to the aspiring young leaders from different fields in bridging the gaps as an agent of change for a progressive society which is scheduled to be held on December 27 under the theme, “Igniting Transformation”.

He also urged to pursue consistently to one’s own dream rather than seeking outer happiness which does give temporary happiness but what truly remain lasting and happiness is the inner desire that comes out from within. He further urged to continue striving in the true spirit of sportsmanship in achieving greater heights.

Gender Specialist, District Hub for Empowerment of Women (DHEW), Shing B,  extended his sincere appreciation to TSU for organising the Open Penalty Shootout 2025 which includes women. He expressed that sports is not merely about prestige, popularity, or wealth, but that it plays a significant role in shaping individuals.

Shing stated that sports contribute greatly to personal development by cultivating discipline, leadership, and confidence. He also noted that sporting events have the unique ability to unite people, promote teamwork, and create a positive and healthy environment for youth engagement. He emphasized that sports has a powerful influence on the social, political, and economic life of every individual, believing that it strengthens community as a whole.

The champions of Penalty Shootout walked away with a prize of Rs  6000, the runners up with  Rs 3000, and individual prize of Rs 1000.

Earlier, the program was chaired by Vice President, TSU, Chongkoi, invocation by Youth Pastor, Baptist Church Thang, Longkoi, special number by Shongmo B, Executive member, TSU, vote of thanks by Lungo, Games & sports member, TSU, and benediction by Shen, Treasurer, TSU.
