Rising People’s Party has on Monday demanded that Nagaland Government to immediately revoke the appointment of one Abdul Kayum Talukdar as Gaon Bura of New Market, Dimapur given that he has been alleged to be involved in an issue “where Naga patta holders were apparently threatened in Assam.”

“There can be no ‘miya’ GB in the state,” RPP stated, claiming that the appointment was illegal and an insult to all Nagas.

“At a time when illegal immigration of IBIs into the state is a time bomb posing the greatest threat to Naga identity, that Talukdars could be conferred GBship is a direct threat to Nagas’ identity,” the party said. It also questioned the Residential Proof Certificates (RPC) that had been issued since Talukdar assumed office and urged the district administration of Dimapur to check all the RPCs, “declare such as null and void and thereafter cancel all the subsequent birth certificates, driving licenses, and trade licenses issued to such persons with immediate effect.”

Further, the Rising People’s Party condemned “Assam government’s insidious policy of pushing and encouraging settlement of IBIs in Nagaland border areas is not only detrimental to the Nagas but the indigenous population of Karbi Anglong as well.”

The people of Karbi Anglong should also realize that both Nagas and Karbis have a common enemy, it said and strongly appealed Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council and Nagaland Government to jointly tackle the issue before it’s too late.

Rising People’s Party has said that if the appointment of the of New Market GB is not revoked, “it can be safely assumed that the government is directly responsible for facilitating illegal immigration into the state.” Moreover, RPP urged the various GB associations – the custodians of Naga customary laws and tradition, to remove Talukdar from their union membership.
