Three soldiers, including a junior commissioned officer (JCO) and two jawans, have died after slipping into a deep gorge in Machhal Sector, Kupwara district in Jammu and Kashmir, the army said.
The incident happened on Tuesday while the soldiers were on a routine patrol along a narrow winter track at around 5.30pm.
The deceased soldiers were identified as Naib Subedar Parshotam Kumar (43), Havildar Amrik Singh (39) and sepoy Amit Sharma (23).
“While moving towards the forward post, snow along the narrow track broke, leading to slipping of one JCO and two Jawaans into a deep gorge”, the army spokesperson said.
The search and rescue operation, with troops from the nearest post, recovered the bodies in the early hours on Wednesday “Inspite of adverse weather condition and rough terrain”, it was added.
