In an unfortunate incident, the chairman of the Action Committee, Tizit Area Students Union (TASU), Ahoa Konyak, was hacked to death with a dao (machete) while on union duty by a drug peddler on Thursday morning.
According to sources, the incident took place around 9:30 am at Phantom colony, Namsa Tizit under Mon district. Following an information received by TASU about drug peddlers present in the colony, three officials of TASU led by Ahoa Konyak had gone to raid the place. During the raid a few cash and drugs were found in the accused’s possession. When the officials further asked him to produce the remaining drugs, the accused allegedly picked up a dao and attacked the Ahoa who succumbed to his injuries on the spot.
After the incident came to light, angry mobs torched the resident of the accused.
Late Ahoa Konyak, 34, was a resident of Nokyan Village and was serving as the Action Committee Chairman in TASU for the fourth term.
The accused has been identified as Menshan Konyak, in his late 20’s and a resident of Longpho village. He has surrendered and is currently under police custody at Namsa Police station while the body of the deceased has been taken to Primary Health Care (PHC), Namsa.
Meanwhile, in a circular, TASU has asked the general public of Tizit jurisdiction to shutter-down for 24 hours with immediate effect till 26 May to mourn the “brutal killing” of Ahoa Konyak.
The Union also said it is compelled to impose such restriction for the greater safety of the general public.
