Devastating mudslide has swept away two houses, five paddy fields and roads in Choklangan Village under Noklak district, Mongtson L Chiu, President, Choklangan Students’ Union (CSU) informed in a press release on Sunday.
According to Chiu, landslides were reported in various locations in the village on Sunday due to the torrential rain in the last few days.
In one such incident, two houses were swept away in a mudslide that occurred around 1:00 am on 9 July 2023. “Fortunately no one was injured, except damage done to the houses and livestock,” he said.

It was also informed that the incident had been reported to the district administration Noklak for relief operation.
CSU further stated that in another incident, five paddy fields were washed away at Wonthai by mudslide “caused by haphazard dumping of earth of the recent road construction.” The owners were said to be in distress by the unfortunate loss of the paddy fields and in need of immediate help.
The press release also informed that many roads connecting Noklak had been washed away by landslided. “One major incident happened at a place Ehoukeh king, Choklangan, making the areas inaccessible to the lone lifeline of the village”, Choklangan Students’ Union stated while urging contractors/firms to clear the road and make accessible at the earliest.
The villagers have appealed to the concern authorities to immediately compensate those affected, and also requested well-wishers to be of assistance to the effected families in this time of distress.
Nagaland Tribune has learned that the Noklak District Administration led by Deputy Commissioner Arikumba and the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) Noklak had visited the affected sites on Sunday and is assessing the situation. A source said that due to the poor road conditions, the areas were inaccessible by vehicle and therefore the team carried out their duties on foot.
