Deputy Chief Minister in-charge of Planning & Transformation and National Highways, TR Zeliang on Saturday called upon the people of Peren to place unity above divisive narratives, asserting that the district’s strength lies in the spirit of “One District, One People, One Family.”
Zeliang was addressing the closing ceremony of the three-day Unity Mini Hornbill Festival-cum-Pre-Christmas Celebration held at the DC’s Office Complex, Peren, where he graced the occasion as Special Guest. The programme was hosted by President, Kuki Inpi Nagaland, L Singsit, IPS (Retd.), and compered by Elia Poireing.
Expressing appreciation to the Deputy Commissioner and members of the District Planning and Development Board (DPDB), Zeliang said the festival was conceived to promote unity and social cohesion in a district that is barely 21 years old but still grappling with several developmental challenges. Referring to the Model Township, he said it was envisioned to accommodate the district’s growing urban and developmental needs but has yet to see the desired habitation and vibrancy. He urged both officials and citizens to take collective responsibility in transforming it into a thriving township, while lauding the Deputy Commissioner’s efforts to revive the initiative.
Addressing speculation surrounding the demand for a separate district in Jalukie Valley, Zeliang clarified that the matter had already been discussed at the DPDB and subsequently placed before the State Cabinet, where the Chief Minister categorically ruled out the creation of new districts, reiterating that no tribe would be allotted two districts.
He emphasized that even earlier demands by other tribes remain pending, and the Cabinet had declined to entertain such discussions. Terming allegations against him as baseless and politically motivated, Zeliang said the creation of districts does not lie within the authority of an individual minister.

Appealing for mutual respect and harmony, Zeliang urged the public to reject misinformation and divisive agendas. Linking the festival with the Pre-Christmas celebration, he encouraged the gathering to embrace the values of renewal, forgiveness, and reconciliation, and to step into 2026 with renewed resolve to improve personal, professional, and community life.
Earlier, L Singsit, IPS (Retd.), in his address, thanked the Deputy Chief Minister for his presence and leadership, stating that Peren district has witnessed accelerated development under Zeliang’s guidance. He also lauded the Deputy Commissioner as a visionary administrator whose tenure has brought visible positive changes to the district. Stressing unity and peaceful coexistence, he said festivals play a crucial role in strengthening inter-community bonds and safeguarding cultural identity.
The Christmas message was delivered by Executive Secretary, RBCAN, Rev Mathiuthai Gonmei, who highlighted Christmas as a season of peace, goodwill, and reconciliation, and called upon the community to uphold compassion, harmony, and togetherness.
The programme commenced with an invocation by Pastor NK Kairi Newmai of Liangmai Baptist Phumling, Jalukie Town, followed by a welcome address by President, Liangmai Council Nagaland, Khenglubo. Cultural highlights included a special performance by the winner of Peren Voice Impact Season 10 and a powerful short play titled “The Dose That Took Everything Away” by Kingdom Stewards, Jalukie, depicting the devastating effects of substance abuse.
Prizes and certificates were distributed to winners of various competitions by the Special Guest and Chief Host. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by President, Zeme Council Nagaland, A. Ernest Sephe, who acknowledged the contributions of all dignitaries, organizers, performers, and participants.
The closing programme marked a fitting culmination of the Unity Mini Hornbill Festival, reaffirming Peren district’s collective commitment to unity, development, cultural preservation, and the enduring spirit of the festive season.
