TRAI alerts public on fraud calls threatening to disconnect mobile numbers

Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has issued an advisory calling public to beware fraud calls its name threatening to disconnect the mobile numbers. “TRAI does not block/disconnect any mobile number of any individual telecom customers,” it informed the public.

It said that “companies/agencies/individuals” claiming to be from TRAI were making fraudulent calls to the public alleging that-

– the numbers were being used for sending unsolicited messages

– the AADHAAR numbers were used for obtaining SIM cards and were being used for illegal activities

TRAI also alerted the public that these malicious companies/agencies/individuals also attempt to trick customers/public to come on Skype video call to avoid disconnection of mobile numbers.

TRAI asserted that it does not block/disconnect any mobile number nor does it send messages or make calls for disconnection of mobile numbers. Further, TRAI has not authorized any agency to contact customers for such activities and all such calls are illegal and are to be dealt as per Law, it stated.

Therefore, any call or message claiming to be from TRAI should be considered potentially fraudulent.

It also stated that as per Telecom Commercial Communication Customer Preference Regulation (TCCCPR) 2018 of TRAI, Access Service Providers are responsible for taking appropriate actions against the mobile numbers involved in sending unsolicited communications.

TRAI also advised affected persons report the matter with the concerned Service Providers directly on their respective Customer Service Center numbers or on National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal https://cybercrime.gov.in or call Cyber Crime Helpline Number 1930.
