Training and demo on post-harvest management of fruits and vegetables held in Kiphire

The Department of Horticulture Kiphire on Wednesday organised a ‘Training & Demonstration cum Distribution of Materials’ programme under North Eastern Council (NEC) project where farmers were given training on post-harvest management of fruit and vegetables under low-cost preservation unit.

Lipichem, District Project Officer (DPO), Department of Land Resources was the special guest at the event. Speaking at the occasion, he congratulated the department for organising such a program which is the need of the hour for the farmers of Kiphire.

He also said that most of the raw materials available to the farmers go to waste due to lack of preservation and management.

Further, the DPO said that with the advancement of technology, there is no excuse for marketing a brand. He also opined that with the help of trainings as this, the state would be able to fulfil the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations.

Lipichem hoped that the training would help unemployed youths find ways to become entrepreneurs and become self-reliant in the long run.

Temjenna Jamir, Agrometeorologist, Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Kiphire demonstrated on guava jam making techniques and also spoke about the importance and scope of post-harvest management of crops in the district.

Nzanthung T. Yanthan, District Fishery Officer, also demonstrated on fish pickle techniques, while Atoholi from department of land resources demonstrated the process of natural tea packaging.

Participants were provided with equipment and materials for making pickles, jam and jelly at the programme.
