A training programme on “Improved Varieties and Value Addition Technologies in Tuber Crops” was held at Tiyi Hall, Wokha on March 12. The programme was organized by ICAR–Central Tuber Crops Research Institute (CTCRI), Thiruvananthapuram, in collaboration with the District Administration Wokha and Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Wokha.
Addressing the gathering, Deputy Commissioner of Wokha, Vineet Kumar, appreciated the scientists from CTCRI for reaching out to farmers in the district and sharing their expertise. He stated that such training programmes create opportunities for farmers by introducing improved farming techniques and modern technologies.
The DC emphasized that while the distribution of farm equipment is helpful, the knowledge and skills gained through training are more valuable for sustainable agricultural development. He encouraged farmers to actively participate and adopt the techniques shared during the programme.

Setting the context of the training, Principal Scientist and NEH Project PI, Dr R Muthuraj, highlighted the importance of tuber crops such as cassava, sweet potato, yam and taro in strengthening food security and improving farmers’ income. He informed that improved varieties and new technologies are being introduced to enhance productivity and value addition in tuber crops.
