Tuensang holds Workshop on ‘Preventing and Combating Child Trafficking’

A one-day sensitisation workshop on ‘Preventing and Combating Child Trafficking’ was held in Tuensang today as part of the “Campaign on Preventing and Combating Child Trafficking in 100 bordering and adjoining Districts of India”, informed DIPR.

The workshop was organised by the District Administration Tuensang in collaboration with National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) and State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR) at the DC’s Conference Hall, Tuensang with Tongpang L. Jamir Advocate, Guwahati High Court, Kohima Branch as the resource person.

A. ZibenthungKithan, Deputy Commissioner,Tuensang in his keynote address said that child trafficking means exploitation and transportation of children under the age of 18 and forcing them against their will, making them victims of cheap labour, child solider, prostitutions and organ trade. He added that child trafficking is common especially in the poverty and illiterate section of the society and this can be prevented by educating children and create awareness to the people.

Tongpang L. Jamir, Advocate, Guwahati High Court, Kohima Branch stated that human trafficking is one of the fastest and profitable organised crime and according to the UN, more than 50 million people become victims of human trafficking each year.

He added that Nagaland is in a transition point where trafficking happens due to its geographical location with international boundary with Myanmar and state boundary with Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur. Meanwhile, the National Commission is trying to cover 100 boundaries and adjoining districts in creating awareness to the people.

Jamir also stated that the main reasons for human trafficking are poverty, lack of employment and pursuit of a better life. He further stated that there is prevalence of domestic child abuse in our society of which some are exposed but many remain unheard due to lack of awareness.

The advocate then provided details pertaining the features, preventive measures and legal provisions of child trafficking.

The programme was chaired by Yangthriba Sangtam DCPO, Tuensang and Vote of thanks delivered by Sentilong Ozukum, SDO (C), Tuensang.

The workshop was attended by the Police, Government officials, NGOs, Tribal leaders, Student and Church organisation from Tuensang Town.
