United Sangtam Students’ Conference (USSC) has said that Hindi, Science, and Mathematics are not taught in 90% of the schools in the Longkhim-Chare Area of Tuensang district. The students’ body informed that it made the discovery during its first phase of Educational Tour in Area which was conducted from 13-21 April 2023.

During its tour, USSC officials visited all Government Primary, Middle, High and Higher Secondary Schools with the principal aim to ensure the delivery of quality education to students and to address any issues or complaints encountered by different schools. The Conference held interactive sessions with both teaching and non-teaching staff members and a key takeaway was that there is shortage of teachers in almost all the schools, it added.

USSC further stated that the lone Government Higher Secondary School in Longkhim has been without a mathematics teacher for over five years and that all the six Government High Schools within its jurisdiction are without a Head Master.

Highlighting the poor school infrastructure including inadequate classroom facilities, poor sanitation and hygiene, and insufficient resources such as textbooks, laboratories, and computers, the Sangtam students’ body stated that such issues can cause severe consequences for students, ranging from poor academic performance to health concerns.

These schools are in rural areas where parents, mostly daily wage earners, send their children to these Government schools with the hope and belief that they will receive quality education, it lamented.

USSC also informed that some teachers working in the Longkhim-Chare area have not received their salaries for several months, some up to six months which has made it impossible to sustain their livelihoods.

The apex body of the Sangtam students’ community therefore urged the Department of Education, Government of Nagaland to investigate the issues and also warned that USSC would shut down those schools if necessary actions are not initiated.

The next phase of education tour will start on June 2023 under Kiphire District, USSC notified.
