Ammunition and unexploded ordnance (UXOs) were unearthed from the campus of Cornerstone Higher Secondary School, Zunheboto on Monday afternoon by the Zunheboto Coy of 11 Assam Rifles.

The discovery was made while acting on reliable input of a source, the AR informed.

The unearthed items included 13 items of 09 x 60 MM Mortar Bombs.

AR official mentioned that the team of 11 AR along with Zunheboto Police reached the site at 1:00 pm and carried out the search while taking all necessary precautions to ensure everyone’s safety. The area of interest was firstly cordoned off and villagers were informed not to venture into the school campus. The area was then searched using metal detectors that led to the discovery of the ammunitions and unexploded UXOs, the security forces said.

A thorough search of the whole campus is said to be in progress since similar type of ammunitions and explosives were earlier found from the site in 2017.

The Assam Rifles officials asserted that it was likely a “cache of unrecognised UG Group”.
