The 19th Mungmung Football Championship 2022 witnessed a new champion in the field of football at Kiphire Local Ground. The United Vikings beat the former 2003 champions Abide FC in a penalty shootout with a final score of 6-1.
The United Vikings scored the first goal of the match under a penalty shoot by jersey number 10 Toka which was put under a draw by jersey number 10 Bei Khiam of Abide FC with a super goal, putting the crowd’s breath on hold and keeping them excited by the very competitive spirit of both the teams.
After the last penalty shootout from both teams, the United Vikings firmly managed to score five solid goals against Abide FC who missed the crown of Mungmung Football Champions by one goal, scoring four at penalty shootout and going home with the title of First Runners Up.
At the end of the 19th Mungmung Football Championship 2022, the other winners were
- Hevika Awomi, United Vikings – Best player of the tournament
- Kumzuk, Abide FC – Best goalkeeper
- Bei Khaim, Abide FC – Highest goal scorer
- Lumli Y Sangtam, New Agers – Best upcoming player of the tournament
Speaking to Nagaland Tribune after the match, Akai K, the coach of United Vikings, expressed his gratitude to God and his team for the victory. He said he felt humbled and blessed from the outset.
T Sekhaba, the Convenor of United Vikings Club, also expressed his joy by thanking God for the team’s victory.
When asked about the overall performance of his team and the opponent, Bei Khiam, the Captain of Abide FC, said he was proud of his teammates. He added that although the United Vikings were good at ground, the Abide FC had maintained a tough ground in the field. He expressed his hopes that the upcoming generation of football players would follow their footsteps in sportsmanship through hard work and discipline.
The medals and certificates were presented by DC Kiphire along with Additional SP and the VP of United Sangtam Students Conference.
The champions of the 19th Mungmung Football Championship went away with a prize of Rs 1 lakh along with a trophy and certificates. The first runners up won Rs 60,000 along with certificates and medals.
