The University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) conducted a workshop on “Career Opportunities in the Context of NEP-2020” on July 4, at Livingstone Foundation International, Dimapur. The event was organised in collaboration with Nagaland University (NU) and North East Christian University (NECU).
The programme also featured a felicitation ceremony honouring the Top 10 NBSE HSSLC Toppers along with toppers from Livingstone Foundation International School.
Addressing the gathering as chief guest, former Chief Secretary Alemtemshi Jamir spoke on the significance of the New Education Policy (NEP) 2020, describing it as a major shift from the colonial-era education framework towards a skill-focused, self-reliant model. He emphasised that the NEP aims to prepare India’s youth for emerging opportunities in a rapidly growing economy, encouraging students to use the policy as a means for personal and societal development.
Highlighting the challenges specific to Nagaland, Jamir underlined the need to adapt the NEP to local realities. He pointed to persistent obstacles in the state’s industrial sector such as land ownership restrictions under Article 371(A), banking limitations linked to land mortgage, and a lack of skilled manpower. He noted that despite central assistance, initiatives like the revival of the Tuli Paper Mill have struggled due to these factors.
He called for a focus on agriculture and rural innovation, observing that a significant majority of Nagaland’s population remains engaged in farming. Jamir urged the youth to use the NEP framework to promote sustainable livelihoods and translate modern technologies into practical benefits for rural communities.

Speaking on the same theme, Head of the Horticulture Department and Pro Vice Chancellor In-Charge of Nagaland University, Prof. Pauline Alila, elaborated on the NEP’s role in equipping students with the skills and mindset required for the 21st-century workforce. She highlighted how the policy encourages holistic, flexible, and multidisciplinary learning, integrates vocational education, and aligns academic pathways with industry needs.
She also stressed the policy’s focus on technology, innovation, entrepreneurship, critical thinking, and respect for India’s cultural diversity. According to her, NEP 2020 broadens career opportunities by promoting academic freedom, skill-based training, and global competitiveness, aiming to produce graduates who are adaptable and future-ready.
