Value of Right to Vote in the Democracy: Yingli College organises outreach awareness programme

The Department of Political Science, Yingli College organised the Outreach Awareness Programme on March 23 at Oushok Village Ground on the theme “Value of Right to Vote in the Democracy”. Teachers and students of the Department participated in the programme, informed DIPR.

In his welcome address, the Village Council Chairman of Oushok village, Chailong Phom, welcomed all the participants and thanked the college authority for organising the programme in the village. Phom stated that the theme of the programme is relevant and shared optimism that it will have an impact on the village people. He also suggested the students to work hard and increase the level of knowledge to serve the Phom Community.

Dr. B. Henshet Phom, Vice Principal, in his address thanked the Village Council members for allowing their public ground for the programme. He informed the VDB members that Yingli College secured NAAC B+ grade due to many such co-curricular activities organised in and around the villages of the district. “Though there are some loopholes in the democracy, it is the best form of government at present,” said Phom citing examples of Japan where education played an important role to grow its economy. Further he suggested the eligible voters should be vigilant and to know the value of right to vote.

Dr. Mahabir Jha, Head, Department of Political Science, spoke on the value and benefit of the outreach programme. “The aim of such programme is to sensitise students to the needs of society and their role in the community, state and nation building. This is a kind of exchange programme which involves social planning, awareness about rights and duties, health support and several social welfare projects. The value of right to vote in the democracy is a kind of awareness programme which helps to sensitise the people about their political rights and duties,” said Dr. Jha. He encouraged the gathering to exercise their franchise to elect the right and honest person who can ensure the development in society. Dr. Jha also suggested all the students to respect each other, create good educational environment in the college and ready to prepare themselves for community service.

During the event, the fourth semester students presented a special number. The programme was chaired by Lemei. L Phom (6th Sem) and concluded with vote of thanks by Chingau Phom.
