Weapons banned in Mokokchung ahead of Koridang by-election

Ahead of the upcoming by-election to the 28th Koridang Assembly Constituency in Mokokchung district, authorities have announced stringent security measures, including a complete ban on the carriage of weapons.

According to a press release issued by Nagaland Police, the by-election, as notified by the Election Commission of India, is scheduled to be held on April 9, 2026, while the counting of votes will take place on May 4, 2026.

In view of the election, the Office of the Chairman, Ceasefire Monitoring Group (CFMG) and Ceasefire Supervisory Board (CFSB) has issued security directives, stressing the need for all factions of the NSCN to adhere to the core objective of maintaining peace during the election period.

As part of the measures, a strict directive has been imposed prohibiting the carrying of weapons of any kind within Mokokchung district. The ban came into effect from March 24, 2026, and will remain in force until further notice. Authorities stated that the decision to lift the restriction will be taken after May 4, depending on the prevailing security situation.

The order applies to all cadres, including those holding special Ceasefire Identity Cards.

Authorities have further appealed to all stakeholders and the general public to extend full cooperation to ensure the peaceful and successful conduct of the by-election in Nagaland.
