7 November 2024: Zosangkim Hmar, a mother of three and a teacher by profession, was allegedly “shot and burned to death inside her home” in Jairolpokpi village, Jiribam, by Meitei militants.
9th November 2024: Meitei woman farmer, Sapam ongbi Sophia, also a mother of three, was shot dead at Wathalambi Loukon in Bishnupur district when militants reportedly started firing at farmers working in the paddy fields.
11th November: According to Manipur Police, the Borobekra Police Station, where Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), mainly Meiteis, were taking shelter, and the CPRF post at Jakuradhor under Jiribam district came under attack from militants resulting in several houses burnt. Later, lifeless bodies of 10 Hmar village volunteers were recovered. “The armed militants were not ambushed but were killed during the retaliatory firing by the security forces. Had the security forces not retaliated, the damage could have been much more,” the Police stated.
In the aftermath, 13 IDPs were reported missing. While five were found later, two dead bodies were recovered and six IDPs, including three women and three children, were still missing.
During the attack, one CRPF constable namely Sanjeev Kumar sustained bullet injury and was evacuated to Silchar Medical College, Assam for further treatment.

Meanwhile, the Hmar Inpui claimed that the 10 Hmar Village Volunteers killed in the attack had “lowered their weapons, and their leader interacted with the CRPF personnel”. However, “a bulletproof CRPF vehicle suddenly opened fire on the volunteers,” it added.
Curfew is imposed in Jiribam district.
12th November 2024: Civil society organizations, from both Meitei and Kuki communities, imposed shutdown across the State. Meitei CSOs appealed for safe return of six missing persons and Kuki CSOs boycotted CRPF.
13th November 2024: Nation Investigation Agency (NIA) took over the cases related to the murder of a Hmar woman at Jiribam by militants and the attack on the CRPF posts.
14th November 2024: Ministry of Home Affairs reimposed Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 in areas falling under the jurisdiction of 6 Police Stations including 2 in Imphal West, one in Imphal East, Jiribam, Kangpokpi and Bishnupur in view od the volatile situation.
“…the Central Government is of the opinion that imposing Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 …. Is warranted to carry out well-coordinated Operations by the security forces to maintain the security situation and contain the activities of insurgent groups …” MHA stated.
Officer-in-charge of Jiribam, inspector Sagapam Ibotombi Singh, transferred.
15th November 2024: Bodies of one woman and two children were recovered from Barak River in Jiribam. They were among the 6 IDPs reported missing since the 11th November 2024 incident.
Manipur Police stated: “Senior officers of IG and DIG ranks of Manipur Police are presently stationed in Jiribam and Borobekra areas for supervision and coordination of efforts by forces regarding the 06 (six) missing persons.”
Bodies of 10 Hmar village volunteers transported to Churachandpur town.
16th November 2024: Bodies of two women and a minor who were missing since 11th November 2024 from Jiribam were recovered from the Barak River.
Manipur Cabinet urges Ministry of Home Affairs to withdraw AFSPA in the areas falling under the jurisdiction of 6 Police Stations as notified on 14th November 2024.
Manipur Government orders temporary internet ban in the districts of Imphal West and East, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Kakching, Kangpokpi and Churachandpur.
Protestors attacks properties and vehicles including those of MLAs and Chief Minister N. Biren Singh in Imphal Valley. Curfew is imposed. “Police have resorted to firing tear gas shells etc. to disperse the mob. Security forces including Army and Assam Rifles have been deployed in Imphal to strengthen the security in the town area. Flag marches have been conducted. 08 (eight) persons have been injured in the process of mob dispersal,” the Manipur Police informed on X platform.
The Ministry of Home Affairs directed the security forces to take necessary steps to restore order and peace. “Strict action would be initiated against anyone trying to indulge in violent and disruptive activities,” the Directive states.
17th November 2024: Protests break out in Thoubal and Kakching districts over the killings of three women and three children in Jiribam.
Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF) claim that at least five churches, one school, a petrol pump and 14 homes belonging to Kuki-Zo community in Jiribam had been burnt down by Meitei militants on 16th November. It also alleges the Arambal Tenggol of killing one Haojoel Doungel (27) in Jirighat, Assam.
Internet ban imposed in Jiribam and Pherzawl districts.
Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), an apex body of the Meitei community, gave a 24-hour ultimatum to the Centre and the State Government to take “decisive action” against armed groups or face public anger.
Conrad K. Sangma, National President of National People’s Party (NPP), writes to Jagat Prakash Nadda, National President, BJP, announcing the decision of the Party to withdraw its support to the Biren Singh led Government in the State of Manipur.
“In the last few days, we have seen the situation further deteriorate where many more innocent lives have been lost and people in the State are going through immense suffering. We strongly feel that the Manipur State Government under the leadership of Shri Biren Singh has completely failed to resolve the crisis and restore normalcy,” the NPP stated.
